Job Description

MediCarrera offers positions for specialists in Ophthalmology for Sahlgrenska University Hospital, located in the Västra Götaland region, in southwest Sweden.

The Department of Ophthalmology has over 260 staff members and offers outpatient care, emergency services, inpatient wards, and surgery. Care is organized into 15 clinical processes or subspecialties, staffed by professionals such as doctors, nurses, optometrists, orthoptists, administrators, and support staff. Each team continuously works on improving clinical outcomes and care quality.

 
Main responsibilities and expectations:

We are looking for ophthalmology specialists in the following areas:

  • Pediatric Ophthalmology
  • Medical Retina
  • As part of the medical team, your responsibilities will include the diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic conditions, with opportunities to work in highly specialized national-level care for pediatric glaucoma and cataract, as well as hereditary retinal diseases.

The position includes:

  • Participation in research and access to continuous professional development.
  • Possibility to collaborate across subspecialties.
  • Implementation of advanced diagnostic techniques.
  • Supervision and teaching of residents and medical students.
  • The hospital is actively working on digital transformation in healthcare. Therefore, digital competence is valued.

 
What is expected from you:

  • Medical and specialty degrees in Ophthalmology issued or recognized by the European Union.
  • Subspecialization or experience in pediatric ophthalmology and/or medical retina.
  • Ability to complete the intensive Swedish language course provided by MediCarrera.
  • Professional attitude and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate, take initiative, and focus on quality in clinical care.
  • Interest and capability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Driver’s license.
     

Salary and conditions:

  • Months 1–6: 60,000 SEK/month ≈ 5,215 EUR/month
  • Months 7–12: 75,000 SEK/month ≈ 6,520 EUR/month
  • After 12 months: Individual salary negotiation as a specialist doctor.
  • On-call duty may be part of the position.
