Job Title:                Registered Staff Nurse

Department:          Nursing

Reporting to:           Clinical Nurse Manager         



Hours of Work: Hours of attendance will be determined by the Director of Nursing.

Staff nurses are required to work night shifts, weekends.


Purpose of the Role:


To promote the health, wellbeing and quality of life for the residents under your care, through high standards of professional nursing practice, based on your professional knowledge, experience and in line with the Health Information and Quality Authority Residential Care Standards for Older Persons. 

To maintain a high standard of professional nursing practice in line with An Bord Altranais Code of Conduct and An Bord Altranais Professional Guidance for Nurses Working with Older People (2009).

To work as part of a team and ensuring Orwell Healthcare is a leader in the field care of older people.


Professional Integrity:


To operate in accordance with HIQA standards and the Health Act 2007 and other relevant legislation.

To be familiar with the requirements set out in the Care and Welfare of Residents in Designated Centres for Older People Regulations 2009 (SI 415 of 2013).

Be familiar with the Complaints Policy, Confidentiality Policy, the Safeguarding Policy and Acceptable Use of IT Policy. 

To maintain a level of professional integrity in accordance with Orwell Healthcare policies and procedures, employment contract, philosophy of care and mission statement.



Professional Development:


Demonstrate a willingness of professional development in view of continuous performance appraisals.

To participate in all mandatory and intermittent non-mandatory training, as part of your professional development and adherence to Orwell Healthcare Policies and Procedures and as arranged by Orwell Healthcare related to your role as a staff nurse.


Responsibilities:

To be responsible and accountable for the quality of care provided to assigned residents and the supervision of Health care assistant providing this care. 

To take responsibility for the duties assigned by the Clinical Nurse Manager 

To maintain during each day/night on duty, policy referenced, whether in writing or verbally for example in handover to other staff or associated healthcare professionals, confidential, timely, accurate and quality assured daily assessments, care plans and narrative records for each resident as required.

To be responsible for the safe ordering, delivery/return receipt, custody, checking and administration of any controlled medications as per the Misuse of Drugs Act and all other medications that are administered strictly in accordance with the General practitioner’s instructions/prescription and that proper, safe and approved control medication management policies and procedures are strictly adhered to.

To be responsible in reporting and recording any medication incident/errors as a professionally registered nurse to the Clinical Nurse Manager, resident, family/advocate and General practitioner, as per the medication management policy and standard operating procedures of Orwell Healthcare.

To ensure as a staff nurse on day or night duty, any inadequate supplies of medications, dressings, stock items are reported in a timely manner to the Clinical Nurse Manager for ordering.

To provide evidenced based and policy referenced care for all nursing procedures, in accordance with the resident’s wishes/preferences and in line with his/her assessments and care plan interventions.

To ensure that as a staff nurse you are fully informed of the Orwell Healthcare Health and Safety policy and Risk Register. This will include knowledge of Fire Procedures, Evacuation Procedures and procedures for reporting an accident or incident related to Health and safety. 

To ensure that as a staff nurse you are fully informed of the Orwell Healthcare Infection Control Policy, including procedures for hand hygiene, barrier nursing, Multi drug resistant organisms like CRE, VRE and clinical waste/sharps management.

To communicate effectively with the Clinical Nurse Manager on duty regarding any health and safety incidents/accidents or infection control concerns.

To be familiar with all statutory instruments of legislation, Orwell Healthcare policies, regulations: including Health Information and Quality Authority standards for Older Persons and any related An Bord Altranais Guidelines for nurses.

To maintain as per you contract of employment full data protection and confidentiality of all information when working onsite or when off duty, related to residents/relatives/visitors, fellow staff colleagues and Orwell Healthcare Ltd. 

To be responsible for developing person centered care plan for assigned named residents and to implement the care as per the agreed care plan.

To fully review and update all assessments and care plans of assigned residents every 4 monthly or when there is a significant change in resident’s condition.

To develop good interpersonal relationship with residents and family members and to conduct care plan meeting s with residents and families to review ad discuss the care plans developed.

To agree to flexibility within this job description as per your contract of employment and carry out such other duties appropriate within your knowledge, experience and scope of practice to the post, as directed by the Clinical Nurse Manager.

Skills and Competencies:


Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with minimum 2 years of nursing experience in the care of the elderly.

Through knowledge in nursing procedures and practice.

To demonstrate skills in basic and invasive nursing procedures.
